Providing safe drinking water is becoming an increasingly difficult task, with challenges reflected in the evolution of drinking water regulations. This paper presents the current ozone practices used at the Choisy-le-Roi surface water treatment plant (106 MGD). The ozonation units are operated with the Performance Ratio (PR), which is the ratio between a measuredperformance and a desired performance i.e. the CT values of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) tables for 3-loginactivation of Giardia. The performance ratio is easy to measure, continuously and reliablyproviding good performance when Giardia disinfection is targeted with respect to thebromate's standards. It has been used continuously since 2001, leading to a more precise control ofoperating conditions, and water qualities. PR is a good tool, which highlights in particular theimportance of the number of contactors in operation simultaneously and the impact of changesin water flow. Includes 10 references, tables, figures.
