The goal of this study is to demonstrate the impact of dosing schemes withpreoxidants (chlorine dioxide and permanganate) and powdered activated carbon (PAC) on MIB and geosmin removal andiron and manganese removal.A bench-scale jar testing apparatus was used to simulate the full-scale conventionaltreatment process. A modified jar with limited headspace was used in all experiments tominimize the loss of volatile taste and odor organics. Tests were conducted at 20°C ± 1°Cwith aluminum sulfate (Al2(SO4)3 · 14H2O, alum) as the coagulant, and preliminary testswere performed to select the alum dose needed to meet US Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA) enhanced coagulation total organic carbon (TOC)removal requirements. Jar tests were run to simulate rapid mix, tapered flocculation and sedimentation. Includes 5 references, tables, figures.
