This paper presents results of a three-year research project by Denver Water todevelop a new method for disinfecting new or rehabilitated water mains usingozone before they are placed into service in a water distribution system. Thelimitations of existing chlorine disinfection practices and the comparativeadvantages of ozone are discussed. A new flow-through method for ozonedisinfection of water mains is described. The disinfection efficiency of thismethod was evaluated in laboratory, pipe loop and full-scale field trials, and theseresults are presented in this paper. Includes 5 references, tables, figures.
