This slide presentation discusses a study performed at Pennsylvania State University (PSU) to: optimize the carbon treatment processes previously developed at PSU (CH4&steam and steam); evaluate the MIB uptake of tailored carbons; and, explore the physo-chemical properties and sorption capacity of modified carbons. Lessons learned include: that it is possible to produce a granular activated carbon (GAC) with more than four times sorption capacity than HD4000; there are two feasible processes for producing an improved GAC, using steam and using natural gas and steam; and, higher pore volume and more stable surface correspond to higher MIB removal.
