The Medford Water Commission (MWC) of Medford, Oregon has added a 45 mgd preozonation facility to its Robert A. Duff Water Treatment Plant (Duff WTP) for taste-and-odor control. The ozone system consists of two 600 ppd skid mounted ozone generators that use oxygen to generate ozone at greater than 10 percent by weight. Oxygen is supplied from liquid oxygen that is delivered on-site and vaporized with ambient vaporizers to gaseous oxygen. Two ozone contactors were designed to provide a 10-minute detention time with both contactors in service at the ultimate flow of 65 mgd. An innovative sidestream system that uses venturi injectors to add the ozone gas to the liquid phase and specially designed nozzles to mix the sidestream with the main flow was designed. While the operating and capital costs for the sidestream system are slightly higher than the fine bubble diffuser system, it will make the maintenance on the system easier. The major shortfalls of the diffuser system are in the replacement of gaskets and cleaning of the diffusers, which is eliminated with a sidestream system. It is also expected that the operations of the facility would be tighter with a sidestream system, since the ozone is applied at one point, mixed well with the main flow, and then can be monitored in the first cell.
