This paper describes a series of rig trials to test the accuracy of continuous turbidity monitors for use in live, pressurized water mains. The conclusions drawn are that continuous turbidity monitoring, on-line, in live water mains offers a promising technique for measuring spasmodic and transient water quality problems. The equipment is available in the United Kingdom (UK) and the technique is in the early stages of application within the UK water industry. More experience with field use is required to enable an assessment to be made of the costs and benefits of the technique compared with other water quality measurement methods. Includes figures.
