The objective of this study was to propose a conceptual mechanistic model to represent the kinetics of microbial inactivation under various disinfection schemes. The model was developed based on a fundamental mechanistic interpretation of various physical and chemical processes that are involved in the inactivation of microorganisms, such as reactive mass transfer of disinfectant through biological membranes (e.g., cell membrane, oocyst wall, spore coat) and chemical reactions between disinfectants and vital components inside the microorganisms. The model was validated with actual experimental data reported in the literature and is currently in the process of being applied to explain the aforementioned phenomena experimentally observed during inactivation of various microorganisms with various disinfectants.
