The objective of this paper is to present the results of an ongoing applied research project by Vivendi Water to develop a new method for measuring UV irradiance in flow-through UV reactors using chemical actinometry. This method is intended to be used alone or in conjunction with UV photocell sensors to improve the accuracy of irradiance measurements, reduce sensor-to-sensor variability, and simplify calibration procedures for UV photocell sensors. The research is being completed in three phases. Phase I (Evaluation of alternative chemical actinometers) evaluates uridine and potassium iodide actinometers to confirm literature findings and select the best-performing actinometer for UV dose monitoring. Phase II (Laboratory evaluation of flow-through and batch actinometer systems) evaluates batch and flow-through actinometer monitoring systems in a pilot-scale reactor, and compares results with a calibrated UV radiometer detector. Phase III (Full-scale evaluation of flow-through and batch actinometer systems) designs, fabricates and installs prototype batch and flow-through actinometer monitoring systems on full-scale UV reactors and evaluates performance in a water treatment plant setting. Phases I and II have been completed and Phase III is scheduled to be completed by December 2002. Phase I results were reported in a previous paper (Schulz 2001) and are summarized herein. The focus of this paper is on the Phase II results. Includes 10 references, figures.
