US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Methods 1622 and 1623 differ from previous Cryptosporidium and Giardia detection methods in their use of improved sample concentration, purification, and detection techniques. Equally as important, however, was the validation of the methods according to the performance-based measurement system (PBMS) approach, the first microbiological methods from USEPA to be validated according to a rigorous performance-based standard. As a result, the requirements for modifying the methods on a single-laboratory or nationwide basis are generally fairly straightforward. However, in practice, this is not always the case. This paper describes the performance-based measurement system approach and discusses how PBMS is used to modify USEPA Methods 1622 and 1623. Includes tables.
