As drinking water regulations become stricter and more groundwater supplies are found to be hydraulically connected to surface waters, utilities will be looking for effective, high-tech ways of complying with the regulations without having to develop sophisticated, high-tech O&M capabilities. After operating groundwater supplies and delivering high-quality water to its customers for decades, the City of Marysville found itself in exactly this position. The GWI determination of its two major supplies, the Stillaguamish Ranney Collector and the Edward Springs, brought on new treatment requirements, new monitoring requirements, and new reporting requirements. The high raw water quality of the two supplies supports the use of new technologies that can be effective, reliable, low-maintenance, and cost-effective for the City. Membrane filtration for the Stillaguamish source and UV disinfection for the Edward Springs source are two high-tech means of providing the effective drinking water treatment needed without imposing significant operating and maintenance protocols on the City.
