This paper discussesa modified type of submerged MF/UF membrane filtration system developed to use gravity to provide the driving pressure to transport the filtrate through the membrane. The paper discusses how this is a significant advance in the technology, because it lowers costs and simplifies the capital equipment, controls, operations and maintenance, especially for larger plant capacities. Additional advantages of the gravity-driven approach include the beneficial use of existing plant hydraulics on retrofits or new facilities where the topography is favorable and a membrane filtration process with greater similarity to the operation of granular media filters. This could ease acceptance of membrane technology by some utilities and would simplify water treatment plant operator training. Includes 3 references, figures.
