The standard method for analysis of geosmin and MIB in drinking water combines close d-loop stripping analysis (CLSA) with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS). A more recently developed preconcentration technique , solid-phase microextraction (SPME), is expected to be included in the next edition of Standard Methods. Very low detection limits can be achieved using CLSA or SPME, but both techniques require a special apparatus and a considerable amount of the analyst's time and attention. Other techniques maybe more suitable meeting specific needs. Alternative methods were evaluated, and several were selected for further testing and development, including solid-phase extraction (SPE), which facilitates rapid analysis of large numbers of samples; distillation combined with SPE, which is useful for solid, semi-solid, or highly turbid samples and for concentrating the analytes to obtain lower detection limits; liquid- liquid extraction (LLE), which provides a convenient means of determining geosmin and MIB in cultures of algae or bacteria; and filtration coupled with SPE or distillation/SPE, which can be used to determine the extracellular concentrations of geosmin and MIB. Several sensory methods are suitable for routine use by operators; but these should be reinforced with analytical measurements as the opportunity arises, and single - operator results should be confirmed before the results are used to guide significant changes in treatment. Analysts have abroad array of methods available to use in their efforts to combat taste-and-odor problems associated with geosmin and MIB. Includes references, tables, figures.
