Although the science of ultraviolet (UV) disinfection for water treatment is being rapidly developed, transfer of the developing knowledge base to assuring disinfection effectiveness for full-scale facilities is not yet as advanced. The City of Henderson, Nevada, is currently constructing one of the first UV disinfection facilities in the United States for water treatment, and the system was specifically designed to receive a credit for inactivation of Cryptosporidium oocysts in a surface water supply. The City's schedule for implementation of advanced disinfection required that the system be designed and constructed prior to the development of specific guidance or design criteria from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). With these constraints, the City of Henderson organized their UV project with an approach to implementation and regulatory approval that built upon the industry's research knowledge base and incorporated the necessary steps throughout equipment procurement, detailed design, construction, testing, and startup to assure the effectiveness of the ultraviolet disinfection system. Includes 10 references, tables, figures.
