This paper presents observations on how to plan and conduct pilot programs that apply microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membrane processes. The dramatic increase in the number of MF/UF membrane facilities and their complexity underscores a need to consider how pilot programs can be designed to yield useful information in a cost-effective and timely manner. This paper discusses the major steps and key issues in the design of pilot programs that include: collecting raw water quality data; desktop study of treatment alternatives; selecting MF/UF and considering pretreatment; on-site bench-scale (jar) testing; writing pilot program protocol; ordering pilot units and other equipment; installing and commissioning pilot equipment; evaluating data periodically; and, writing the report. Includes 3 references, tables, figures.
