This paper outlines a situation at Modesto Reservoir, owned and operated by the Modesto, California, Irrigation District, where on three separate occasions during the summer of 1999 the reservoir was found in violation of the secondary standard for Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE). This reservoir is used as a source for drinking water, but allows whole body contact with the water and thus, is used for recreational purposes also. It was agreed to sell only MTBE free gasoline at the marina and to deny vessels carrying MTBE laden fuel access to the reservoir. A three-tiered plan for dealing with the problem in the future is presented. Includes figure.
