Basic information of the selectivity of perchlorate relative to the common anionsfound in natural waters is required to design ion exchange processes for perchlorate removal from water. Thus, separation factors have been calculated at three different temperatures for numerous strong-base resins. In an attempt to relate selectivity to resin properties, the following resin characteristics were studied: matrix (polystyrene, polyacrylic, and polyvinylpyridine); functional groups (trimethylamine, dimethylethanolamine, methylpyridine, and trialkylamine); and, porosity (microporous, macroporous, and isoporous). After the perchlorateseparation factors were obtained, they were used to model the behavior of resin columns in groundwater of varying composition. These predictions were then validated with experiments using several different types of resins operated at varying exhaustion/regeneration conditions. Includes table, figures.
