Recent studies of the health effects of arsenic (As) in drinking water haveconcluded that the current Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for As is not sufficiently protective of public health. In response, the US Environmental Protection Agency is proposing to lower the As MCL from 0.05 mg/L to 0.005 mg/L, which will force many utilities to install treatment systems to remove As. The critical factors in the performance of all As-removal systems are concentration and speciation. Arsenic concentration varies greatly around the world. Arsenic speciation is important because toxicity studiesindicate that the inorganic forms As(III) and As(V) vary considerably in toxicity, and generally are much more toxic than organic forms of As. This paper summarizes As compounds expected in water supplies and As concentration and speciation in natural waters. The paper also reviews existing ion exchange methods for As speciation. Includes 17 references, tables, figure.
