The latest findings continue to show that ultraviolet (UV) radiationis an efficient disinfection process against Cryptosporidium cysts and does not result in the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). This paper presents the preliminary results of a pilot study conducted at the Hemphill Water Treatment Plant in Atlanta, Georgia. The study is part of a larger project on innovative technologies for UV disinfection. Two UV pilots are being operated in parallelon the filtered water. One is equipped with a low pressure high output lamp, and the other with a medium pressure lamp. The focus is on operational issues and long-term reliability. Includes 21 references, figures.
