This paper presents a case study of the Rancho Cordova water system in Sacramento,California. This water system serves over 12,600 service connections using 10 active wells and 1 surface water treatment plant. The system has been severely affected by groundwater contamination from an industrial and aerospace facility. Contaminants include volatile organic chemicals, perchlorate, and N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). Beginning in 1998, the Rancho Cordova system had 18 wells and operated a surface water treatment plant during the summer months. During the intervening 30 months, NDMA has been detected and confirmed in 7 wells, and recently an eighth well had an initial detection (still unconfirmed). In an attempt to solve water supply challenges posed by the loss of these 8 wells, several optional methods of replacing the supply were reviewed.
