Despite reduced levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) found in the environment today, the detectionof N-nitroso compounds is important due to their carcinogenicity and mutagenicity. The determination of NDMA at sub part per trillion (ppt) levels in aqueous samples is not easily accomplished due to its small molecular size and the polar nature of amine compounds. The Orange County Water District Laboratory of Fountain Valley, California, has developedan analytical method that uses liquid-liquid extraction techniques and positive chemical ionization (PCI) with an ammonia reagent gas at low pressure settings for the determination of NDMA. This paper reports the results of various tests conducted to determinethe reliability and efficiency of this detection method. Includes 10 references, tables.
