Aeromonas hydrophilia has been proposed as a candidate for US EnvironmentalProtection Agency Regulations under its Candidate Contaminant List. In addition, larger utilities may be required to monitor for it as an unregulated contaminant. Currently, an ampicillin-dextrim based medium is being examined for possible use nationally. Accordingly, it is imperative that a number of critical issues be resolved objectively. Moreover, these issues pertain to microbes and drinking water in general and, hence, utilizing Aeromonas as a model for future regulatoryprocesses can create a rational procedure based on scientifically defendable data. This paper discusses two issues that must be satisfied including the epidemiology of gastroenteritis and methods of detection. Includes 36 references, tables.
