To assist utilities in selecting arsenic removal technologies that are properlyintegrated into existing treatment systems, the American Water Works Association Research Foundation funded a project to develop a comprehensive decision tree for arsenic treatment. The decision tree will serve as a guiding tool for a utility in narrowing the field of feasible arsenic treatment alternatives and will enable surface and groundwater utilities to assess realistic arsenic removal options based on water quality conditions and the need to achieve multiple treatment objectives. This paper describes the project goals and the steps taken to develop the decision tree. The paper discusses potential modifications for various existing treatment plants and the role of plant size and location in determining treatment options. Includes table.
