The City of Hutchinson, Minnesota, has high concentrations of ammoniain the source water and high distribution system copper concentrations. Ammonia concentrations exceed 1.7 mg/L and copper concentrations are more than twice the regulatory standard. Ammonia occurrence has caused numerous operational challenges including filter nitrification, distribution system nitrification, high chlorine demands, and resulting treatment capacity limitations. The treatment effectiveness of ammonia and copper corrosion control treatment alternatives was evaluated. Pilot testing was performed for two alternatives including zeolite softening using ammonia specific resin, and biological nitrification. Includes 21 references, tables, figures.
