The objectives of this study are: to investigate arsenic removal capability in conjunction with iron and manganese treatment; to identify preliminary design and operating features of a Pyrolusite system for concurrent arsenic, iron and manganese removal; and, to estimate capital and operating costs. The technical approach involved bench scale column studies to investigate basic removal properties of Pyrolusite, and pilot studies to assess combined arsenic, iron and manganese removal. Preliminary results indicate that: dual media bed of Pyrolusite and granular ferric hydroxide can remove the arsenic level from 20 ug/L to ND (<2 ug/L); a 46% of arsenic reduction using Pyrolusite media alone was observed with 0.6 mg/L of iron concentration; and, no remarkable arsenic removal was obtained by using conventional sand and anthracite pressure filter. Includes 18 references, tables, figures.
