This paper provides a brief overview of pilot testing that was done to determine regulatory compliance issues related to disinfection byproduct control for one of the City of Dallas, Texas, water treatment plants. Raw water ozonation tests were conducted with pilot-scale units built by CDM Engineers & Constructors Inc. The ozone module consisted of four six-inch diameter contact columns, an oxygen separator, an ozone generator, a sample conditioning unit for the ozone analyzer, a feed-gas and off-gas ozone analyzer, and an ozone destruct unit. The four ozone contact columns were arranged as follows: counter-current, co-current, counter-current, and co-current. Ozone residuals were collected at four sample taps located at equal intervals along the height of each ozone column. Ozone residuals were measured by the indigo colorimetric method using the Hach AccuVac ozone ampuls and a Hach spectrophotometer. Ozone disinfection CTs were calculated by taking the average of the ozone residuals measured between sampling taps and multiplying this by the disinfection contact time, T10, calculated for the ozone columns based on flow.
