This powerpoint presentation begins by outlining the project background which includes the location, the City of Las Cruces, New Mexico; the challenge being that the City has several groundwater wells that containelevated levels of naturally occurring uranium; and theproject scope of evaluating treatment technologiesand assessing disposal alternatives. Topics covered include: Naturally Occurring Uranium Information;Radionuclides Rule;Uranium Treatment Technologies; and,Uranium Residuals Management. Project Status Update includes:ion exchange (IX) (non-regenerative) was selected and piloted;pilot program indicated IX will successfullyremove uranium below MCL; City has not been utilizing wells that exceeduranium MCL; and,City is considering whether to abandon wells withuranium or implement IX as well-head treatment. Project Summary:there are several treatment technologiesavailable to remove uranium;the biggest challenge by far is handling anddisposing of the waste; and, it is important to fully understand and considerresiduals handling and disposal methods andregulations prior to implementing treatmenttechnologies.
