The Silt Density Index (SDI) and the Modified Fouling Index (MFI) are used for the evaluation of the fouling nature of membrane process feedwaters. High indices are generally associated with rapidly declining membrane productivity and low indices with much more stable productivity. However, due to the many static and dynamic dissimilarities between index tests and actual membrane operation, no mathematical correlation can be drawn between fouling as it occurs in each application. This paper presents the results from a study that surveyed eight full scale groundwater and three pilot scale surface water reverse osmosis plants and correlated index test to plant membrane productivity data for both classes of feedwaters.
