The objectives of this study were to determine the distribution of natural organic matter (NOM) and trihalomethane formation potential in selected Florida waters as a function of apparent molecular weight (AMW) and to determine if the reactivity of NOM in forming THMs is also a function of AMW. Conclusions regarding membrane treatment effectiveness may then be drawn by comparing the AMW distributions of the waters tested and the nominal molecular weight cutoff specifications of the membranes under consideration.
