This powerpoint presentation begins by defining riverbank filtration (RBF) as thepassage of surface water through the bed orbanks of a stream or lake into an aquifer, and as a sustainable alternative to surface watersupplies. The presentation covers the various types of RBF configurations that include: shallow wells (low capacity banks);galleries at the riverbank edge to the interior;galleries beneath the river;deep wells with induced vertical leakage;Ranney collector wells;water tunnel concept with laterals;infiltration galleries; and, horizontal wells. Filters and flow issues are presented, along with Darcy velocity, selection of screen type and slot size, comparison of well designs, principle design considerations, flowpath, removal of Cryptosporidium, Giardia, bacteria, viruses, natural organic matter, and humics, engineered treatment vs RBF, beach collector wells, lessons learned from drought operations, changing river conditions, pesticides and agricultural runoff, minimizing the impact of river geomorphology, reduces vulnerability to weather events, improved security against terrorism and sabotage, and costs. Includes tables, figures.
