This paper begins by giving a history of drinking water production in the Netherlands and discusses climate change and how the availability of natural resources may change in the future. The focus of the paper is on the flex water concept that is being studied in the Netherlands. The approach integrates water management measures such as flood storage, aquifer storage and recharge with innovative treatment techniques such as membrane technology.
