This paper describes how EPA New England and the New England Water Works Association (NEWWA) promote voluntary drinking water protection activities through a cooperative education and awards program. Since 1997, this cooperative program has recognized twenty-five (25) businesses such as golf courses, farms, real estate developers, telecommunications companies. Each business took voluntarily measures that resulted in the prevention, reduction and elimination of pollution to public drinking water supplies. Each year the EPA-NEWWA program recognizes efforts by businesses working with water suppliers to protect public drinking water supplies. Many businesses have improved their facilities' impact by treating storm water run-off, reducing pesticide applications and practicing erosion control. Other businesses have set aside land for protection near wellhead protection areas or surface water reservoirs. Other businesses have worked with local public water suppliers on spill response planning and practice drills. Includes reference.
