The individual wastewater agencies in the Las Vegas Valley have practiced reuse at varying levels since 1931. However, these agencies, as well as the potable water agencies, have recognized the need to manage water reuse issues beyond their individual boundaries. To achieve this end, the four agencies that contribute wastewater as well as the three potable water purveyors combined their resources to sponsor an "Area-Wide Reuse Study for the Las Vegas Valley Study Area" (Study). The Study culminated with a regional wastewater reclamation plan to meet existing and future demands for the area, with phased implementation over a 20-year period. The purpose of the Area-Wide Reuse Study was to develop a regional wastewater reclamation system plan to economically meet future demands and develop a phased implementation of this plan through the year 2020. This Study reviewed the regulatory requirements of reclaimed water treatment and use, compiled existing and proposed facility information, analyzed reclaimed water demand and wastewater supply, recommended systems that could service the existing as well as the high probability future demands and suggested an implementation plan for sequencing the systems. The Reuse Study planning area is enclosed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Land Disposal Area Boundary. The availability of water is critical to the continued growth of southern Nevada. All water sources must be optimized, including treated wastewater. This Study was not an attempt to require the direct reuse of all treated wastewater. Demands are limited to those that are legally, culturally, and economically viable and follow current practices. However, additional uses were suggested and demands for these uses were estimated in the event that a greater quantity of reuse was desired. Includes tables, figures.
