This paper presents the results of characterization and treatability testing, and the conceptual design of a treatment system for winery and distillery wastewater that will be reused for vineyard irrigation. The wastewater produced at the facility comes from the production of wine, brandy, high proof alcohol, and cleanup activities. Due to recent tightening of state requirements for land application of food and beverage processing wastewater, and Canandaigua Wine Company's plans for consolidating and expanding the facility, the existing wastewater treatment was inadequate. Canandaigua had to reevaluate the characteristics, segregation options, and treatability requirements that would be needed to recycle, reuse, and discharge the effluent to the land treatment facilities. This paper presents the results of characterization, and bench- and pilot-scale treatability testing for solids, organics, and nutrient removal using anaerobic and aerobic biological and physical-chemical treatment methods. Based on the test results, Canandaigua developed a conceptual design of a wastewater treatment system for solids, organics and nutrient removal that included energy recovery. The treatment system is designed to produce effluent of suitable quality for reuse in vineyard irrigation and to recycle for facility cooling and clean up. Includes tables, figure.
