Tacoma Water initiated an Industrial Water Conservation Audit Program to study the potential for potable water conservation at large industrial facilities in one of Tacoma's principle industrial neighborhoods. As part of the audit effort, an evaluation was made of the potential water savings that could be cost-effectively applied within each industrial facility given its water use needs, equipment configuration, and process requirements. This audit process represented water savings "inside the fence," meaning the conservation measures developed were solely applied to the specific industry. In addition to individual evaluations, a separate evaluation was made of each facility's ability to either be a source of "harvested" industrial water or a user of industrial water that had been harvested within the industrial neighborhood. This second evaluation was based on the same data collected during the primary audit process, but focused on potential water sources and use points that could be matched between industries, i.e. "outside the fence", rather than within a single industrial facility. This type of conservation has been termed Inter-Industrial Recycle and Reuse. Includes table.
