The University Area Joint Authority (UAJA) serves the Borough of State College,Penn State University, and the surrounding townships of College, Ferguson,Harris, and Patton by providing high quality treatment of wastewater to theCentre Region of Centre County, Pennsylvania. Wastewater flow at the UAJA SpringCreek Pollution Control Facility is currently at 5.0 million gallons per day(MGD). Based upon the amount of vacant land available for commercial andresidential development within the current UAJA sewer service area, flows couldreach as high as 9.0 MGD within twenty years. To adequately plan for thepredicted growth, the Centre Regional Planning Commission, in conjunction withits consultant Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc. published the Wastewater Treatmentand Disposal Alternatives Study for the Centre Region. The overriding goal of theStudy is to identify an alternative that provides an additional 3.0 MGD ofwastewater treatment capacity for the Centre Region, while protecting the highquality of the area's water resources. The Study proposed twelve alternativesthat could adequately treat the expected increase in the region's wastewaterflow. Two additional alternatives were developed and added to the original twelvebased on discussions with the various municipalities, government agencies, andconcerned public groups of the Centre Region. This paper introduces therecommended alternative: beneficial reuse. Includes table, figure.
