The objective of this study was the development and application of a mathematical model for predicting the inactivation of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts in ozone bubble-diffuser contactors. The model was fitted with inactivation rate terms based on semi-batch kinetic data, and verified with pilot-scale inactivation data. The model was formulated from mass balance principles incorporating contactor hydrodynamic information obtained from tracer tests, experimentally measured pathogen inactivation, ozone decomposition and mass transfer kinetics. The hydrodynamics inside the contactor chambers were assumed to approach ideal axial dispersion reactor (ADR) conditions. The ADR model could be used for counter-current flow (water flowing downward and gas flowing upward), co-current flow (both water and gas flowing in the upward direction) or reactive flow chamber configurations. The last of these options would correspond to a chamber part of a multi-chamber ozone contactor receiving water with ozone residual present but without ozone gas being applied.
