The US Environmental Protection Agency Test & Evaluation facility constructed a pilot-scale pipe dead-end zone to study residual chlorine decay. Preliminary studies were conducted to characterize the hydrodynamic characteristics of the pilot system. On-going activities include a series of experimental testing of chlorine decay according to detailed experimental designs. This paper describes the experimental device and the results of tracer studies. It also reports some preliminary results. Two phases of experiments were designed for the on-going research project. The first was tracer studies for characterization of hydrodynamic characteristics of the pilot system, and determine fluoride hydraulic dispersion under the designed hydraulic conditions. Fluoride was selected as a surrogate of chloride. The results of tracer studies were used to calibrate chlorine dispersion model specific to the pilot system, and to define the background baselines at the absence biofilm. In the second phase, biofilm growth and chlorine concentrations were monitored at the same hydrodynamic conditions as for the tracer studies. Also, chloride concentration in the water storage tank was varied to simulate change of chloride concentrations in water mains.
