The Partnership for Safe Water (PSW) was developed in a cooperative effort by several agencies and organizations. The purpose of the Partnership is to encourage US water suppliers to survey their utilities to identify areas that will enhance the water system's ability to prevent entry of Cryptosporidium, Giardia and other microbial contaminants into treated water and to voluntarily implement those actions that are appropriate for the system. Although the Pennsylvania-American Water Company (PAWC) conducts an ongoing filter plant performance evaluation program, the Company joined the PSW to address the efficiency of treatment and consistency of their water supply. While the PAWC delivers approximately 210 mgd to its customers and may be considered a large public water supplier, it is composed of 46 public water systems. This paper discusses PAWC's experiences with the PSW at small and medium sized filtration plants.
