As a component of a larger study, total biodegradable organic matter (BOM) concentrations at three full-scale treatment plants were established using a modified version of the bench-scale biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) method. This method involves continuous passage of water through a pair of glass columns containing glass beads which support an acclimated indigenous biofilm. Before this method could be implemented in full-scale plant sampling situations, some modifications to the original bench-scale method were necessary. This paper describes method modifications, reasons for the modifications, general observations following two years of continuous use, potential drawbacks associated with the method and an overall comment on the practicality of the modified method as tested.
