High and reproducible recoveries of Cryptosporidium using immunomagnetic separation (IMS) have been seen in studies conducted in DI water to determine the method detection limits, but information on IMS performance in turbid samples is limited. This study was performed to assess how turbidity affects IMS recovery with the Dynal Dynabeads(R) IMS kit which is currently available commercially for Cryptosporidium testing in water. Recovery of low numbers of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts, suspended in three raw water matrices at three different turbidity levels (5000, 500 and 50 NTU), from different geographical locations in the US, were investigated using the Dynal immunomagnetic separation techniques.
