The North Jersey District Water Supply Commission (NJDWSC) is a 140 mgd drinking water treatment facility located in Wanaque, New Jersey. The facility operates an in-house water quality laboratory that is responsible for compliance monitoring, watershed and treatment analysis, as well as additional applied research projects. Due to the number of samples that the laboratory analyzes each year, it became apparent that a computerized database system was needed to more effectively organize, store and analyze sample data. A laboratory information management system (LIMS) was purchased in 1990 with the intention of integrating a local area network (LAN) specifically for laboratory and pilot plant operations. The LIMS has since developed into a tool for organizing important watershed and compliance data for various regulations. This paper discusses the development of the LIMS and how it is currently used.
