The purpose of this study was to control diatom activity in biological activated carbon (BAC) filters to prevent filter clogging and taste and odor problems. Links were explored between filter removal efficiencies and the relative abundance of microorganisms, such as protozoa, diatoms and rotifers, during several treatment stages.
