The Information Collection Rule will compile data from over 500 treatment plants based on 18 monthly samples. It is, however, unclear how this data will be analyzed and how well the results will represent the variability of pathogen occurrence in surface waters used as sources of drinking water. This study was undertaken to explore the variations in Giardia and Cryptosporidium detection in source water samples that occur due to sample collection and analysis. The project involved 72 sampling campaigns that included daily, monthly and quarterly sample sets collected by different personnel.
