The water supply of Metropolitan Toronto, Ontario, has experienced sporadic episodes of taste and odor (T&O) during the past several years. In late August 1993, a serious T&O episode emphasized the need for a simple analytical procedure to assess the presence of possible T&O source compounds. The requirements of the procedure were that it be cost effective, have a short turnaround time and that it make use of available equipment. This paper describes a dichloromethane liquid/liquid extraction method followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometer-selected ion monitoring for the determination of geosmin and MIB (2-methylisoborneol). The procedure has a method detection limit of 10 ng/L and has been used successfully to identify geosmin, MIB and other T&O compounds.
