Northwestern drinking water supplies are often characterized by low alkalinity which requires chemical treatment for corrosion control. In addition to pH adjustment and the use of phosphate inhibitors, supplemental carbonate alkalinity is typically required for adequate water stabilization and control of lead and copper leaching. Although soda ash or sodium bicarbonate are often used for this purpose, the cost of these chemicals provided an impetus for an evaluation of alternative sources for pH adjustment and carbonate alkalinity addition. This paper discusses the implementation of a lime saturation system combined with carbon dioxide to address pH adjustment needs.
