Predictive disinfection byproduct (DBP) models are now available for both raw/untreated water and chemically coagulated water. In this study, these empirical models were used to predict trihalomethane (THM) formation in either raw water or treated water to simulate the risks associated with chlorination byproducts in various types of source waters and to compare the relative risk of raw versus coagulated waters. Models were also used to access various conditions as specified for the total organic carbon (TOC) versus alkalinity matrix (3 x 3 matrix) in the Enhanced Coagulation (EC) Rule. These simulations were intended to augment interpretation of the EC rule in terms of risk reduction. Furthermore, a set of bench-scale experiments recently conducted under enhanced and two optimized (alum and iron) coagulation conditions were compared with the simulated results.
