The objective of this research was to investigate the use of feed pretreatment processes to reduce membrane fouling. Microfiltration, GAC filtration, alum coagulation, biofiltration and ozonation/biofiltration were investigated as pretreatment schemes to reduce the fouling of a hydrophobic UF membrane (10,000 MWCO). The effect that the pretreatment processes had on the removal of organic matter, disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursors and turbidity was also investigated.
