Ozone enhances ultrafiltration for treated water (clarified and settled water) but reduces fluxes for raw surface water for low ozone dose. The critical zone for raw water is from 1 to 3 mg/l ozone introduced. As ozone reacts rapidly with organic matter especially with insaturated compounds (50% reduction for only 1.5 mg O3/l introduced), the membrane permeability is improved from 10 to 20% compared to ultrafiltration treatment alone. In raw water, ozone does not only react with soluble organic matter but also with particulate matter. Indeed a microflocculation phenomena for the critical ozone doses appears and participate to the membrane fouling. This microflocculation phenomena is the consequence of a surface charge neutralization, an increase in size of the particle, a polymerization of organic matters and a precipitation of oxidation byproducts with bivalent compounds.
