The capabilities of the electrodialysis reversal (EDR) process are helping many municipal and industrial users in desalination applications where high water recovery is important for resource conservation and cost control. The maximum water recovery for a particular application depends on a variety of factors. in most applications the water recovery is limited by the potential for scales to precipitate from the concentrate. EDR has the ability to operate at high supersaturations of scale-forming salts in the concentrate and is unaffected by silica. This translates to a high water recovery capability. These are the reasons EDR is meeting the needs of users. This paper discusses the source of EDR wastewater; some examples of high water recovery installations; concentrate scaling limits; calcium carbonate; calcium sulfate; barium sulfate; strontium sulfate; calcium fluoride; and silica.
