For public water supplies, the increase in nitrate concentration is becoming an important problem in many countries. Among the treatment processes available, the removal of nitrates by membranes and ion exchange has been thoroughly studied in recent years. This paper describes the basic principles of nitrate removal by reverse osmosis and by ion exchange. The proposed combined process of nanofiltration membranes with ion exchange resins is discussed in more detail.
